Office Procedures Q & A

What types of in-office procedures are available?

Dr. Das provides a range of in-office procedures to help you achieve optimal health. Many of these exams begin in the same way as your pelvic exam, where you lay on a table with your feet in stirrups. Dr. Das uses a speculum to gently hold open the vaginal walls and inserts certain instruments into the vaginal canal, such as a colposcope, to enable better viewing.

The in-office procedures available at Advanced OB/GYNE Associates include:

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a quick 10-20 minute procedure for examining your cervix, vulva, and vagina for signs of disease. A small sample of cells might be collected for testing.

LEEP

Dr. Das may recommend a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) if you have an abnormal cervical cancer screening result. This procedure removes abnormal cells from the cervix using a thin wire loop.

Hysteroscopy and polypectomy

A hysteroscopy is used to diagnose or treat uterine complications. The procedure utilizes a thin, lighted device called a hysteroscope that displays images of your uterus on a screen. Dr. Das may perform a hysteroscopy to investigate abnormal bleeding or to remove a polyp in a polypectomy.

Endometrial biopsy

An endometrial biopsy involves Dr. Das removing a small piece of tissue from your uterine lining.

What birth control options require an in-office procedure?

Some forms of birth control require an in-office procedure to insert a device that secretes hormones or blocks the passage of sperm.

NexplanonⓇ

Nexplanon is a thin, small, flexible contraceptive implant that secretes hormones and provides up to three years of pregnancy protection. Dr. Das discreetly places it under the skin on the inside of your upper arm.

IUD

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small T-shaped device placed in your uterus. Some IUDs secrete hormones and last three to five years, while others act as a spermicide to prevent pregnancy and can last up to 10 years.

EssureⓇ

Essure is a permanent form of birth control that involves a soft, flexible insert that Dr. Das places into each of your fallopian tubes. Over the next three months, scar tissue and a barrier forms around the inserts to block the passage of sperm.
